Give Up Running On Empty For Sacred Rest

Ah, SACRED REST… that was the second thing on my list of what’s in for 2015. I just love the way that sounds and love the practice even more. This replaced “running on empty”, which is out for this year. What is sacred rest? It’s a concept that I learned during my Martha Beck Life Coach Training Certification last year, which I will share a bit more about now.

Often times while we are glorifying being busy, we burn ourselves out, and we end up running on empty. Just like our cars, we need fuel in our tanks to keep going. Not just fuel in the form of physical energy but also mental and spiritual energy. Sacred rest is a way to quickly refuel your tank when you find yourself on empty, as well as a great habit to get into to help you avoid burning out and getting to that place of being on empty.

Sacred rest is quite simple. It’s taking 10-15 minutes each day to lie down and rest your body, mind, and spirit. It’s not meditation and it’s also not the same as doing nothing (which I wrote about in last week’s blog). First, by lying down, you’re resting your body. Naturally, thoughts will arise in your head as you take 10-15 minutes in the middle of the day to lie down. Thoughts such as: “I don’t have time to lie down”, “I’ve got so much to do”, “I’ve got another client call in 30 minutes and a presentation to prepare for”, “Who lies down in the middle of the day?”, etc.

The chatter will keep going and that’s okay. In fact, that is what you need to tell yourself as your mind races: “It’s okay. It’s all okay”. Say this to yourself in your most loving and soothing voice. This rests and eases your mind while at the same time renews your spirit, all while your body is lying down and therefore in a resting position. So why do we call this “sacred” rest? Because it’s honoring the needs of your body, mind, and spirit. It’s a process and a practice that is to be highly valued and respected, as is anything sacred. And it is to be treated as such by you.

Close the door, lie on the floor in your office or, if you have a couch or a bed handy, go there. Honor this time to REST. Treat it as you would any essential appointment in your day. It’s only 10-15 minutes once a day. It can make all the difference in keeping you from getting burned out and running yourself ragged. And remember, running on empty is out for this year – Sacred Rest is in.
