Last year I wrote a blog post regarding creating space in your life to make room for new things, or changes to occur (Create Space In Your Life). This is a similar topic but one that focuses more on the things you are allowing into your life. It’s a simple concept yet one we may have difficulty implementing: Say no to the things you do not want so you have space to say yes to the things you do want.
What this really means is that you are aware of what you are trying to create in your life, whether it’s an advance in your career or a new leadership role, and you align all you’re doing to that objective. It means you say no to the things that do not support you in reaching your objective (and pass them off to others who can take on those responsibilities or tasks) so that you have space in your life to say yes to the things that will support you in reaching your objective.
If you continue to say yes to everything that is presented to you (every new project, new volunteer opportunity, or task team to lead) and those things do not align, in some way, to where you are headed, then you will not have the time or space to say yes when the right project or volunteer opportunity presents itself to you.
Set your objective, keep it in the forefront of your mind and align all your actions to support you reaching that objective. When an opportunity presents itself to you, ask yourself whether it is in support of or alignment with that objective. If it’s not, say no. When you start saying no to what you do not want, you create space in your life for the things you do want to show up. And then you can say yes.
