Shift Happens

A senior vice president of HR whom I used to work with used to say, “shift happens” whenever there would be organizational change occurring. And, considering organizations are regularly changing, I heard him say that quite a bit in the few years I worked with him.   The saying “shift happens” reminds me of the quote, “a bend in the road is not the end of the road, unless you fail to make a turn”.

Yes, shift happens.  Organizations change and so do people and if we want to keep up, we need to continue to reassess our values, motivators, and priorities and how they align with the shifting organizational needs and priorities.  The start of a new year is a great time to do this type of reassessment to determine where you are in relation to your organization.   If you happen to be job seeking, it’s also a great way to ensure that your values and priorities are aligned with those of the company you are pursuing for employment.

Although the beginning of the year is a great time to do this type of reassessment, it also is something that can and should be done regularly because you want to be sure your career plan is relevant at any given point in time. You want to be sure you are shifting in a way that works best for both you and your organization.   Yes, shift happens and will continue to happen and you want to be sure you are prepared to make the turn when that bend in the road occurs.
